Volga Shipping Company opens navigation on the Upper Volga river
On April 25, Volga Shipping Company (a part of UCL Holding) held a ceremonial opening of the navigation season on the Upper Volga river. According to the company, a convoy of four Volga-Don ships and 4 pusher tugs with cargo sections passed the lock gates of the Gorodetsky hydrosystem and set sail for Cherepovets and the ports of the Onega lake. About 40 more units will start working during the coming week.
In 2018, Volga Shipping Company’s navigation season opened one month ahead of the traditional starting date. The first vessels of the shipping company started operating on the Don river (Rostov-on-Don) on March 2. Navigation season on the Lower Volga (Volzhsky, Volgograd Region) began on April 1.
More than 60 units of the Volga Shipping Company’s cargo carrying and towing fleet are in operation on the rivers. To date, the company has carried 400,000 tonnes of different cargo.
Volga Shipping OJSC is one of the biggest transport companies in Russia. It was founded in 1843. The company transports cargoes along rivers and lakes of the country. In 2017, Volga Shipping carried 6.5 million tonnes of cargo.
The Company is a part of VBTH, shipping division of Universal Cargo Logistics Holding, international transportation group consolidating a number of Russian railway, stevedoring and logistic companies (the majority stakeholder of VBTH). The division also comprises North Western Shipping Company, V.F.Tanker and Okskaya Sudoverf shipyard.
