Conditions for entry into force of BWM Convention not yet met - Russian Maritime Register of Shipping
Russian Maritime Register of Shipping informs that as on 18 January 2016 the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) has been ratified by 47 countries, which is much more than the required 30. However until now the global tonnage of merchant fleet of the signatories comprise 34,56 % (while 35 % is required), which means that the conditions for entry into force of the BWM Convention are still not met.
According to the press release of the International Maritime Organization, after Indonesia and Morocco deposited instruments of ratification in November 2015, the verification of tonnage figures of the signatories in November 2015, was performed by the IMO and IHS Maritime & Trade. The verification has established that the conditions for convention’s entry-into-force have not been met yet.
IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim appealed to those countries that have not yet ratified the BWM Convention to undertake necessary measures. This relates especially to the countries with large merchant fleet.
