Vitaly Klyuev meets with maritime officials of Singapore
The Russian candidate for the post of IMO Secretary-General Vitaly Klyuev has held several official meetings with the maritime officials of Singapore, including Minister of Transport of Singapore Mr. Lui Tuck Yew, Permanent Secretary Mr. Pang Kin Keong and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) Chief Executive Mr. Andrew Tan, the candidate's official website said.
The meetings took place during Mr. Klyuev's visit to the country within the Singapore Maritime Week 2015 by the invitation of the MPA. During the meetings the candidate shared his vision of the IMO future and the parties exchanged their views on the current issues of IMO's activities, including the long process of implementation of instruments adopted by IMO, such as BWM convention, MARPOL Annex VI, the Manila amendments.
Mr. Kyuev commented: "IMO should ensure everything that is adopted can be implemented. The Secretariat role is to provide measures to facilitate the implementation. We need to implement the existing regulations first, rather than develop the new ones. We should collect and analyse data on the implementation of the instruments and develop measures focusing on specific countries and specific problems.".
The parties unanimously agreed on the growing share of the Asia-Pacific region as regards shipping and therefore to on the need to focus on the timely implementation of the international instruments aimed at the protection of seafarers rights and the environment.
Deputy Director, the Department of State Policy for Maritime and River Transport of Russia's Ministry of Transport Vitaly Klyuev is competing with five other candidates from Cyprus, South Korea, Philippines, Denmark and Kenya for the IMO Secretary General top position. The present incumbent, Mr. Koji Sekimizu, ends his four-year term as Secretary-General on 31 December 2015.
