Nuclear rocket cruiser Pyotr Veliky ensured safe transportation of Syrian chemical weapons (photo)
The nuclear rocket cruiser from Russia's Northern Fleet Pyotr Veliky (Peter the Great) carrying out a mission in the Mediterranean Sea, has completed ensuring security for yet another stage of transporting Syrian chemical weapons, the Russian Defense Ministry says.
The cruiser has performed the operation jointly with battleships of the Chinese, Danish and Norwegian navies. The battleships of the four countries ensured the convoy's safety of the special cargo vessel Taiko, each in a certain sector.
The coordination of activities of foreign ships involved in ensuring safe transportation of Syrian chemical weapons is carried out at the headquarters aboard Pyotr Veliky. The headquarters members represent the commandership of the Chinese, Danish and Norwegian ships.
It is for the sixth time that the seafarers of the Northern Fleet ensuring safe transportation of Syrian chemical weapons. Earlier, the Pyotr Veliky crew in association with Chinese, Danish and Norwegian military sailors implemented similar tasks on January 7, January 28, February 10, February 27 and March 1 of 2014.
