Sevmash commences modernization of Admiral Nakhimov cruiser (photo)
Repair and modernization of large nuclear-powered guided-missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov being carried out by Sevmash OJSC have entered the active phase, says press center of the shipyard. The schedule of operations has been already made for 2014.
The technical project is being developed by Severnoye Design Bureau. The modernization of the cruise started with dismantling of heavy equipment and systems subject for replacement and repair. This will reduce the weight for easier transfer of the vessel from the quay wall to the shipyard’s pool. Special pontoons are currently under production in one of the workshops of the shipyard.
Large nuclear-powered guided-missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov is the third vessel of the series built by Baltiysky Zavod OJSC (Saint-Petersburg). It was laid down in 1982 and delivered to the Navy on May 10, 1989. The vessel was designed by Severnoye Design Bureau OJSC (Saint-Petersburg). According to the decision of RF Defense Ministry and Economics Ministry, as well as to the state contract, the ship was transferred to the water area of Sevmash on August 14, 1999 for a scheduled yard repair.
Sevmash OJSC signed a contract with RF Defense Ministry on repair and modernization of the large nuclear-powered guided-missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov in May 2013. The document was signed by Deputy Minister of Defence Yury Borisov and Sevmash Director General Mikhail Budnichenko.
