DNV to develop regulations for use of methanol as ship fuel by summer 2013
DNV plans to develop the regulations for the use of methanol as ship fuel by summer 2013, IAA PortNews journalist cites DNV representative Christos Chryssakis as saying at Alternative Fuel Conference in Helsinki arranged by Northern Dimension Partnership on Transport and Logistics.
According to him, the methanol production volumes are not large today. The majority of the facilities are in Sweden. Besides, the production of this fuel from the natural gas increases greenhouse gas emissions, though there are more environmentally friendly technologies of methanol production.
According to Carl Carlsson, representative of Swedish Ship-owners Association, Stena Line already uses methanol as fuel for one of its ferries as a pilot project.
The advantage of methanol against LNG is less space needed for it onboard the ship. Methanol is already being used at motor transport.
