NY-NJ reports strongest volume of 2011
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey saw its busiest shipping month in nearly a year in May as loaded container volume grew 5.7 percent over the same month a year ago.
Import volume increased 3.2 percent over May a year ago, but May 2011 volume also grew 6.3 percent ahead of April to 230,054 20-foot equivalents.
Export business grew faster, expanding 9.7 percent from a year ago and 5.2 percent on a month-to-month basis.
The overall loaded container volume of 377,987 TEUs was the most the Port Authority has handled since July 2010 and imports reached the highest point since last August.
Container volume at New York-New Jersey for the first five months of the year was 9.7 percent better than the same period a year ago.
