Yuzhny harbor dredging project gains pace
The Ukrainian port of Yuzhny is implementing the dredging project, the state-owned stevedore company said. Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port awarded ChernomorNIIproekt with the contract for developing the project for expansion of existing channels, upgrade of 4 berths and turning basin.
The project means deepening passage channels and port waters to 21 meters.
The need for dredging the harbor was discussed back in 2008. The project was part of the port’s expansion program approved by the Ministry of Transportation and Communication in 2009.
However, due to the economic crisis, the project was delayed.
In October 2010, Corporate Solutions elaborated and presented the feasibility study of the port’s expansion, which was funded by the EU Commission in the framework of technical assistance.
In May 2011 the company announced a tender won by ChernomorNIIproekt.
On June 20 the document was handed over to the Customer. Now the documents are undergoing public examination.
"With the depths of 21 m, we could completely load or unload 200,000dwt and 19,5m draft ships just at our berths, without additional loading at outer anchorage. So, Yuzhny port will become equal to its main rival on the Black Sea – Romanian port of Constanta, where water depth is 19 m," says the chief of Yuzhny port Alexander Lagosha.
State-run Yuzhny Merchant Sea Port founded in 1978 is located on the northwest coast of the Black Sea, in the ice-free Small Adzhalyksk (Grygoryivsky) estuary, 30 km northeast of Odessa. The Port is connected to the sea by a 3km-long 14-m-deep canal. In 2010 the Port’s throughput rose year-on-year by 2.1% to 18,22 m tons.
