Emergency after ships collide near Yangshan port
Government teams on Tuesday boarded a foreign cargo ship after fumes were reported in a cabin following a collision with another ship, Shanghai Daily reports.
Officials said the situation was "under control" after a container of inflammable chemical goods was taken off the ship.
No one was injured in the incident, said officials, but they were still monitoring for possible pollution.
Two foreign cargo ships, CSAV Petorca and CCNI Rimac, had collided near the Yangshan port around noon on Tuesday, said the Shanghai Marine Search and Rescue Center.
One cabin on the CCNI Rimac was damaged and water leaked in, said the center.
Officials said 26 containers on board fell into the water.
The ship requested to dock at the port after the collision but was told to stay in nearby waters so that emergency workers could get on board to check out the situation.
They found that the inflammable goods had reacted with leaking water and caused the fumes, officials said, adding that there was the possibility of explosions.
The crew was evacuated while emergency workers tried to move other containers off the ship.
City marine authorities said that they were looking for the missing containers. Water traffic has not been affected.
