NYK to trial hybrid power system
Shipboard tests are to begin next month on hybrid power system onboard the solar assisted Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) car carrier Auriga Leader, Seatrade Asia online reports. The system jointly developed by NYK, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Monohakobi Technology Institute ClassNK uses the self-developed large nickel hydrogen batteries known as Gigacell. The hybrid power system was developed as a stable power supply from solar panels proved difficult due to changing weather conditions. “Charging and discharging a fluctuating amount of solar power generated by this hybrid power supply system will stabilize the supply to the vessel’s electrical power system. This will also minimize output fluctuations from the diesel power generator and secure a stable power supply,” the four partners said.
