10-km long oil spill in Bulgarian part of the Danube
A 10-km long oil spill has been located by experts in the Bulgarian part of the Danube River, between the Lom region villages of Dobri Dol and Orsoia. A ship traveling upstream caused the pollution, Bulgarian National Radio reported according to Bulgarian News Network.
The density of the oil spill was low, ecologists said. It was made of diesel or ship fuel, the national radio reported. By 2pm the oil spill nearly reached the Lom port, where it started to disperse, Darik Radio reported. The managers of Kozlodui nuclear power plant were immediately warned in order to provide all measures necessary for the security of the power plant. In case tap water sources are polluted, the provision of drinking water in the regions would cease.
In the beginning of October another oil spill, originating in Serbia, reached the Bulgarian part of the Danube. The spill was 60-km long. It polluted the riverbank and some traces have not been cleaned yet.
