Hanjin redelivers panamax boxships
Hanjin Shipping is offloading up to eight panamax containerships that it has had on long-term charter for several years.Voracious Mediterranean Shipping Co will take the 4,545 teu Pusan Senator and sistership Pudong Senator from the first half of next year, according to broking sources.The Geneva line is reported to be paying between $26,500 and $27,000 per day for the pair for three years, or possibly slightly longer.Brokers are also sounding out the market for interest in another four, all thought to be the same as the pair just taken by MSC, that will be available in the second half of the year when released by Hanjin.
Both French line CMA CGM, as well as MSC, are said to be interested in the quartet. Hanjin subsidiary Senator Lines recently announced it would be cutting back its service network from next year because of competitive pressures. Six services are to close, with the Bremen line concentrating on just 12 key routes in future. Earlier this month, the line chartered out two other 4,545 teu panamaxes, the Yokohama Senator and the Portugal Senator. CMA CGM took both for up to 18 months at just over $29,000 a day. Hanjin Shipping extended the charter on the 4,545 teu Penang Senator and Portland Senator last year for eight years at $32,000 per day, but the market has since softened considerably.
