First of new berths for Bremerhaven
Bremerhaven has taken into operation the first berth of the CT IV expansion project at its container terminal. When the expansion is complete, the port will have a container handling capacity of about 7m teu, writes Katrin Berkenkopf in Cologne. “If growth continues at previous rates, we will reach the record figure of well over 4m teu this year,” said Jörg Kastendiek, port senator (minister) for the city state of Bremen. “Over the next months, the new berth for mega-container vessels will help to cope with the growing cargo volumes.”
The next berths are expected to come on stream next January and August. Earlier this year, the senator said that the last berth will be operational by April 2008 — nine months earlier than originally planned.
