K' Line to relocate to larger Yokohama terminal
Japanese transportation giant "K" Line is moving its container operation at the Port of Yokohama to a larger terminal in order to handle greater numbers of containers as box volumes are growing at a faster rate than expected, the company said. This comes after the shipping line concluded an agreement earlier this year with port authorities at Yokohama to exclusively lease the Honmoku A 5, 6 berth, which is scheduled to be operational around the end of November or in early December . The larger container terminal at Honmoku A 5, 6 berth will provide the company with additional capacity as it occupies an area measuring 124,000 square metres and its 400-metre-berth will be 130 metres longer than its existing berth. The container yard will also offer 50 per cent more space than is currently available at its terminal at the Honmoku A8 berth. The new terminal can handle 205,000 TEU each year, up from about 151,000 TEU at present.
"K" Line has enjoyed exclusive use of its existing berth since 1969, and since that time it has acted as a gateway to the Tokyo Metropolitan area together with the Port of Tokyo for the company's worldwide containership business. A statement from the shipping line added that the larger terminal would help the company "successfully deal with the expected rapid cargo growth in global container trade, including but not limited to inter-Asia trade".
