Increased container transportation by Ukraine-Poland railway services
State Administration of Ukrainian Railway Transport reports about increase of container cargo transportation in the direction of Poland. Through 8 months of 2006 container cargo transported by Ukraine-Poland lines grew by 130% against year-on-year result amounting to 38.6 thou TEU. The figure includes month-by-month growth of volumes transported by high-capacity containers. The Administration attributes the above result to increased attention of railway authorities to the sector of piggyback transportation as well as to the tendencies of market demand. The following routes demonstrate positive tendencies: Warsaw-Prague-Iljichevsk-Warsaw-Prague and Warsaw-Prague-Zaporozhye-Warsaw-Prague lines. This process has actually marked change of tendencies in Ukraine-Poland container transportation after long period of stagnation. In particular, “Yaroslav” piggyback line (Kiev-Slavkuv) started in 2003 was closed in 2005. The reasons put forward by Ukraine were absence of demand for this particular service as well as low tariff level for Polish railways. In July 2006 both sides initiated the decision on resumption of “Yaroslav” line operation.
