China advocates denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, spokesman of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Liu Jianchao said at a briefing on Thursday.
Asked about Chinese measures against North Korea following the nuclear test, the spokesman said that specific measures should contribute to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and stability
and security in the region.
China is continuing consultations will all parties concerned, including non-participants of six-sided talks on the Korean peninsula nuclear issue, the Chinese diplomat said. The main goal of consultations is to develop ways to settle the North Korean nuclear problem through peaceful talks and consultations, he said.
The diplomat did not exclude the possibility of sending a Chinese envoy to North Korea, saying that there are a lot of ways to exchange and uphold contacts, and China is choosing rational ones.
However, he refused to answer which North Korean officials are involved in talks with China.
If the United States and North Korea are able to mitigate differences through bilateral contacts and talks and attain mutual trust, than China would hail such contacts, the spokesman said, adding that six-nation talks provide such a possibility.
