STX Shipbuilding wins $468 mln order from Greece
STX Shipbuilding Co., the world's seventh-largest shipbuilder, said Wednesday it had secured a 440-billion-won ($468 million) order to build six bulk carriers from a Greek shipping company.
The order calls for STX Shipbuilding to deliver the vessels to Anangel Maritime Service Inc. by June 2011, the company said in a regulatory filing.
The shipbuilder, a unit of South Korea's STX Group, said it will focus on building larger ships such as oil tankers and liquefied natural gas carriers.
Its net profit reached 41.1 billion won last year, compared with a loss of 6 billion won a year earlier.
South Korea, home to seven of the world's top 10 shipyards, clinched record-high orders last year because of strong demand for crude carriers and offshore exploration equipment amid lofty oil prices.
South Korean shipbuilders such as Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. are expected to see their exports rise 18 percent to $26 billion this year on the back of continuous demand for high-end ships and other products.
