Danaos almost doubles its containership fleet
Danaos Corporation has announced the expansion of its fleet with orders for nine new containerships, and has arranged charter coverage for its entire current fleet in 2007.
Danaos has signed shipbuilding contracts with Hanjin Heavy Industries for five 6,500 TEU vessels, due for delivery in late-2009 and throughout June 2010.
Danaos also arranged to charter three of these vessels to the Yang Ming Group for a period of fifteen years.
This new order increases Danaos' total order book to 23 containerships with a total carrying capacity of 130,524 TEU, or 94% of its current fleet.
Last week, Danaos took delivery of the 4,300 TEU Norasia Integra (ex ER Auckland), which will commence its twelve-year charter with the Yang Ming Group in May 2007 when its current charter with Norasia ends.
The addition of the Norasia Integra brings the number of Danaos’ containerships to 31.
Danaos also signed an agreement with CMA-CGM to time charter three containerships for a period of 36 months, beginning when the vessels’ current employment ends in 2007.
The 3,039 TEU Henry and the 3,045 TEU Independence are currently on time charter with Wan Hai, with expiration dates during the second quarter 2007, while the 3,098 Victory I is currently under time charter with Norasia with an expiration date during the third quarter 2007.
These are the only vessels in the Danaos fleet that were becoming available for re-charter in 2007. Danaos has now secured 100% charter coverage for its fleet in 2007.
Earlier this month, Danaos signed shipbuilding contracts for four 6,800 TEU vessels with China Shipbuilding Trading Co. The vessels will be built by the Shanghai Jiangnan Changxing Heavy Industry Co, and are scheduled for delivery to Danaos during the second and third quarter of 2010.
