Ningbo Port Group to invest US$82m in Wenzhou box/bulk terminal
The Ningbo Port Group plans to invest CNY632 million (US$81.65 million) to build a multi-purpose terminal in Wenzhou's Oujiang port area, Xinhua reports.
The group is awaiting the go-ahead for the Lingkun Multi-Purpose Terminal from the Zhejiang Communications Department and Wenzhou government.
So far the Ningbo Port Group has signed a letter of intent with Wenzhou's Longwan district government outlining its plans to invest in the new terminal that is intended to strengthen existing port operations between Wenzhou and Ningbo.
The design calls for the new terminal to be located inside the Lingkun operation zone and equipped with four 10,000 tonne multi-purpose berths to handle container and bulk cargo, an 800-metre quay and 420-square metres of back-up terminal land.
The first phase of the project will boast a cargo handling capacity of 1.93 million tons and 160,000 TEU, while the second phase will raise the capacity to 2.72 million tons of cargo and 250,000 TEU annually.
This latest investment is in line with the Ningbo Port Group's strategy to expand its domestic port operations on the Chinese mainland. It recently co-operated with Wenzhou's Pingyang County on a project to build a container terminal in the Ao River area, which required an additional investment of CNY300 million to develop a link road from the port to the 104 national highway.
