China major ports Feb container throughput surges 41.2 pct yr-on-yr
China's major sea and river ports handled 7.63 mln twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in February, a new record and up 41.2 pct year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Communications.
The surge in container throughput for the month was a turnaround from a year earlier with February traditionally the low season for the shipping sector, the ministry said in a statement.
Cargo turnover rose 21.4 pct year-on-year to 379 mln tons in February, with shipments up 23.8 pct at 134 mln tons.
In the first two months, container throughput at China's ports stood at 16.05 mln TEUs, up 30.2 pct from a year earlier, while cargo turnover increased 21 pct to 800 mln tons.
Iron ore imports increased 9 pct in February to 29.7 mln tons, and 6.8 pct in the first two months to 61.7 mln.
The ministry added that iron ore imports are likely to surge this month because a scheduled price hike for iron ore is to take effect in April.
China has more than 40 major ports, each with annual throughput capacity of over 5 mln tons.
