DP World strengthens its Kalmar terminal tractor fleet at Jebel Ali Port
DP World continues to invest in its Jebel Ali Port container facility with an order for 84 Kalmar PT122 terminal tractors, due for delivery this summer to the new Terminal 2, or T2, expansion phase.
The partnership between DP World and Kalmar Industries stretches back to the early 1980s when the first terminal tractor was delivered to the port owner/operator. DP World now has hundreds of units in use.
The new PT122 terminal tractors on order will be engineered as evolutionary versions of the previously supplied units currently working at Jebel Ali Terminal 1. This model is a reliable and robust container yard tractor and comes equipped with an EU Stage 3A / Tier III engine. Combining the latest technology with tried-and-tested components, the PT122 units will feature a specially designed 5th wheel construction, a larger A/C capacity and a unique driver’s seat configuration. Customising its products based on operational requirements further shows Kalmar’s long-term commitment to partnering with each customer.
DP World operates more than 40 Kalmar straddle carriers at Port Rashid. At Jeddah and Djibouti ports, it operates Kalmar rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, while at Jebel Ali it has retrofitted dozens of RTGs with Kalmar’s patented Smartrail® autosteering and container position verification system. A long-time user of Kalmar empty container handlers (ECHs), DP World ordered 23 units for Jebel Ali Port in 2006, complementing annual deliveries of between five and ten ECHs in recent years.
Situated 25km south of Dubai, Jebel Ali is the largest duty free port in the Middle East. T2 operations are expected to commence in 2007 and expand the port’s capacity by 5 million TEUs. In 2006, Jebel Ali Port handled 8.9 million TEUs, up from 7.7 million the previous year.
Kalmar is the world’s leading provider of terminal tractors with a broad range of application-based models designed specifically for performing short-distance container and trailer moves in a variety of operating environments. Last year saw the achievement of two key milestones for Kalmar’s terminal tractor business: the launch of its sophisticated i-model unit designed specifically for RoRo handling and the assembly of its 40,000th terminal tractor in the US.
