Sabah to open new container port in April
A new MYR400 million (US$114.1 million) container port at Sapangar Bay in Malaysia's Kota Kinabalu is expected to come on stream at the beginning of next month.
The new container port will be equipped with modern cargo handling equipment and boast a 500-metre long quay and depth alongside of 12 metres, meaning it will be able to handle two container ships with a capacity of up to 3,000 TEU at any one time. Annual capacity for the facility will be 500,000 TEU.
The Sabah state government plans to turn the Sapangar Bay Container Port into a hub for the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines-East Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), as well as stimulate growth within the local manufacturing sector, reported the Sabah Daily Express.
