Truck delays costly at Auckland container port (New Zealand)
Trucking companies say they are losing money waiting for containers to be unloaded at the Ports of Auckland.
Delays have caused queues of trucks backing up in city streets.
It is being blamed on a massive increase in container traffic since Danish shipping company Maersk chose Auckland over Tauranga as its favoured North Island port.
The Road Transport Association, says in hindsight, the port should have bought more straddle carriers to unload the containers, before the increase in traffic.
The association says trucking companies preferred the previous situation where there was competition between Auckland and Tauranga, rather than having one port with a monopoly.
