The Saif Powertech Limited to operate container terminal of Chittagong Port
A private company will undertake the operation of Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT) of the Chittagong Sea Port.
The Saif Powertech Limited, the private company, will handle the port activities at CCT on the supply operate-transfer (SOT) basis, official sources said.
SOT means the private operating company will supply equipments, operate port operation and transfer to the original authority after a certain period.
Communications and Shipping Adviser Maj Gen (retd) Abdul Matin said the government had earlier decided to handover the operation of the CCT and New Mooring Container Terminal to the private ownership, for modernising the Chittagong Port.
Besides, he said, the government had already employed a Japanese firm to conduct feasibility study, including the selection of site, for establishing a deep-sea port within shortest possible time.
The CCT that will go to private operation today can accommodate around 6, 000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) containers at a time and provide berthing facility to three to four feeder vassals at a time. It may be mentioned here that the New Mooring Container Terminal is much bigger than the CCT.
The government has decided to privatise the operation of the Chittagong Port and the New Mooring Container Terminal due to repeated demand from leaders of the business community.
Outgoing President of BGMEA SM Fazlul Huq and President of Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry Saifuzzaman Chowdhury yesterday told The New Nation that they had raised the demand during their recent meetings with Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed. Both the business leaders and officials of the Chittagong Port Authority expressed the hope that the privatization would help improve the cargo handling, container delivery and shipment radically.
Meanwhile, the Chittagong Customs Authority has introduced a Сgreen channelТ at the Port, which made the container delivery of RMG sectorsТ export and imports much smoother.
