Merchant Navy becomes Nautilus
TWENTY-one years after changing its name from the Merchant Navy and Airline Officers’ Association, NUMAST – the UK’s National Union of Marine Aviation & Shipping Transport Officers – is changing its name again, to Nautilus.
From today Nautilus UK takes over from NUMAST – the National Union of Marine Aviation & Shipping Transport Officers. And at the same time, NUMAST’s Dutch partner union FWZ has become Nautilus NL – a move that reflects the increasing cooperation and coordination between the two bodies. ‘Given the nature of the discussions between NUMAST and FWZ on forging closer links, we believe now is an appropriate time to simultaneously change our names,’ said general secretary Brian Orrell.
‘The re-branding of our organisation will allow us to refresh our campaigning approach and to demonstrate that we are progressing similar issues, with similar policy objectives,’ he explained.
The creation of Nautilus UK and Nautilus NL is intended to act as a precursor to the planned formation of a single Nautilus union in 2008 – subject to ballots of both memberships.
