Remontowa installed scrubber on Grande Lagos
In October 2018, Grande Lagos, ship which belongs to Grimaldi Group Company left Remontowa Shiprepair Yard SA, Remontowa says in a press release.
Container/ RoRo Carrier, which was built in 2014 in Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in Ulsan, has a length of 236 meters.
The ship came for a class renewal survey and maintenance services, but the main part of the project involved the installation of a scrubber.
The type of scrubber: Open Loop Scrubber System, Wärtsilä.
The scrubber system is designed to remove SOx from the exhaust and operates utilizing seawater. The open loop scrubber system is most straightforward scrubbing method. It utilizes the natural alkalinity in seawater for scrubbing, and does not need caustic soda. This method can be used in most seas around the world, where alkalinity levels are high. Exhaust gas enters the scrubber and is sprayed with seawater, the SOx in the exhaust reacts with water and forms sulphuric acid. Chemicals are not required since the natural alkalinity of seawater neutralises the acid. Wash water from the scrubber is treated and monitored to ensure that it can be discharged into the sea with no risk of harm to the environment.
Over the recent years Remontowa SA has installed scrubber system retrofitting on around 40 vessels, this year altogether 9 scrubbers were installed.
