Baltiysky Zavod shipyard loaded FPU Akademik Lomonosov with first 15 fuel assemblies
Specialists of AO Baltiysky Zavod shipyard (Saint-Petersburg, United Shipbuilding Corporation) started loading nuclear fuel into the reactor plants of the world’s first floating power unit, the Akademik Lomonosov, Project 20870. According to the shipyard, 15 fuel assemblies have been loaded into the starboard reactor.
Nuclear fuel loading operation was shifted from Saint-Petersburg to the base of FSUE Atomflot in Murmansk by the decision of Rosatom. The operation is performed in two shifts by specialists of Baltiysky Zavod (more than 40 specialists) under scientific supervision of National Research Center «Kurchatov Institute» and technical supervision of Afrikantov Experimental Design Bureau.
On 28 April 2018, the world’s first floating power unit, the Akademik Lomonosov, left the Baltiysky Zavod. It took the tugboats of Rosmorrechflot’s Marine Rescue Service 20 day to tow it to Murmansk.
Specialists of AO Baltiysky Zavod met the FPU in Murmansk on May 19. The facility was docked and prepared for nuclear fuel loading upon completion of which the FPU will undergo its mooring tests.
AO Baltiysky Zavod (Saint-Petersburg) specializes in construction of rank 1 surface-crafts, ice class vessels with nuclear and diesel-electric propulsion plants, nuclear floating energy units, floating distilling plants.
The shipyard was set up in 1856. In its history Baltiysky Zavod which had built over 600 ships and vessels. The Company’s staff currently numbers over 6,000 employees.
AO United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) is the largest shipbuilding company in Russia. It was set up in 2007 with 100% federal ownership. The holding comprises 40 companies and organizations (major shipbuilding and shiprepairing companies as well as leading design bureaus). Currently, USC consolidates the bulk of the domestic shipbuilding complex. The Russian market is the main focus of the state corporation though it also exports its products to 20 countries worldwide.
