Torqeedo receives European Commercial Marine Award for Maritime Sustainability
Torqeedo says it received the European Commercial Marine Awards (ECM) prestigious Maritime Sustainability Award for its outstanding achievements in environmental and sustainability initiatives, July 3 at Seawork International 2018 in Southampton, UK.
Torqeedo was recognized for its contributions to the development of the ECOCAT, an 18-meter, 120-passenger electro-solar vessel recently launched by Metaltec Naval Shipyard and designed by m2 Ingenieria Naval. The ECOCAT runs on 100 percent solar power - it carries no auxiliary combustion engine – and will operate as part of the Mar Menor Ferry fleet. It is powered by two 50 kW Torqeedo Deep Blue electric motors and eight Torqeedo 30.5 kWh high-capacity batteries with technology by BMW i. The vessel can operate more than eight hours on batteries without recharging, even in the absence of sunshine.
The ECM Maritime Sustainability Award is awarded to a company or organization operating within the commercial marine and workboat sector which demonstrates outstanding focus in its environmental and sustainability efforts. This, and other, industry awards are presented on the opening day of the Seawork International Exhibition & Conference.
“It has been a pleasure to work with Mar Menor Ferry, m2 Ingenieria Naval and Metaltec, pioneers in the development of solar-powered commercial vessels,” said Torqeedo CEO Christoph Ballin. “The companies bring a refreshing combination of forward vision, creative ideas and innovative engineering.”
