Finland and Sweden to promote the Bothnian Corridor together
Finland’s Ministry of Transport and Communications says Finland and Sweden will launch cooperation to promote the railway project around the Gulf of Bothnia. Finland’s Minister of Transport and Communications Anne Berner discussed the matter with Sweden’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Tomas Eneroth on Monday, 26 March 2018 in Sundsvall, Sweden.
The countries suggest that the EU-wide TEN-T transport network be extended with the so-called Bothnian Corridor, which would consist of a railway between Helsinki and Tornio in Finland and Stockholm and Haparanda in Sweden. At the moment, the TEN-T network includes nine core network corridors.
“I am glad that we are together promoting a project that is important for the northernmost parts of the EU. A core network corridor would ensure high-quality connections to other parts of Europe”, Minister Berner says.
If the EU Commission decides to connect the Bothnian Corridor with the TEN-T network, Finland will be entitled to apply for EU support for improving the railway between Helsinki and Tornio, main road four and other connections in northern Finland.
