Transit shipments of containers on Russian Railways' network increased by 40% in January-February 2018
In February 2018, 326,200 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEUs) containers were transported on the network owned by Russian Railways on all types of routes, 16.7% more than in February 2017.
In January-February 2018, the volume of traffic amounted to 643,700 TEUs, an increase of 13.2% compared to the same two months last year. 274,500 TEUs were dispatched on domestic routes during the first two months of the year, up 5.9%, while the number of transit containers jumped by 40.8% to 65,200 TEUs. Exported container numbers amounted to 174,500 TEUs, an increase of 17.3%, while the number of imported containers was 129,500 TEUs, up 20.1%.
The transportation of loaded containers on all types of routes increased by 16.9% during January-February 2018 compared to the same period of the previous year and amounted to 421,500 TEUs, which was equivalent to about 6 million tons of freight, an increase of 13.7%. The following categories of freight were transported. Figures in brackets show the percentage change compared to January-February 2017:
- chemicals and soda – 73,000 TEUs (+9,2%);
- paper – 49,100 (+10,8%);
- timber – 49,000 (+30,7%);
- industrial goods – 42,200 (+22%);
- fabricated metal products – 37,700 (+27,3%);
- cars – 32,000 (+30%);
- machines, machine tools, engines – 28,600 (+33,6%);
- non-ferrous metals – 17,700 (+10,3%);
- ferrous metals – 17,000 (+24,3%);
- chemical and mineral fertilisers – 10,100 (-2,1%);
- construction materials – 10,000 (+9,2%);
- miscellaneous and assemblies – 11,800 (+6,1%).
