EPPR table-top exercise on oil spill response in the Arctic will be run in Oulu on 7 March 2018
The Arctic Council’s Working Group on Emergency Prevention, Preparedness, and Response (EPPR) is preparing to run a table-top exercise on oil spill response in the Arctic in Oulu, Finland on Wednesday 7 March 2018. According to the Arctic Council, the table-top exercise (TTX) is directed at testing and improving cooperation and coordination processes in the event of a real-world marine oil incident that could impact the Arctic Council States.
The exercise is being held under the 2013 Agreement on Cooperation on Marine Oil Pollution Preparedness and Response in the Arctic, which was negotiated under the auspices of the Arctic Council. The objective of that agreement is to strengthen cooperation, coordination, and mutual assistance among the Parties to the Agreement on oil pollution preparedness and response in the Arctic.
This TTX will not include a functional deployment of resources. However, resources will be deployed at sea during a joint live oil spill exercise hosted by Sweden and Finland during the same timeframe and synergies between the table-top and the live exercise will be explored.
Previous such exercises have been held in 2014 and 2016.
