Marine Engineering Bureau congratulates its colleagues from Universal Cargo Logistics Holding on the Holding’s 10th anniversary!

In 2009-2010, together with the specialists of Volga Shipping Company and Okskaya Shipyard, we designed dry cargo carrier of Project RSD44, Heroes of Stalingrad type, for mixed, sea/river shipping. The ships of Volga-Don Max class with decreased air draught are able to pass under the bridges of Saint-Petersburg, Rostov and Moscow.
The result of our joint work - 10 new dry cargo carriers of project RSD44 built by Okskaya Shipyard in 2011-2012 for the Holding’s Volga Shipping Company. Over a 5-year period, those new ships carried about 5 mln t of different cargo.
In 2011, with the efforts of the Holding’s special group, we designed a Volga-Don Max tanker of VF Tanker type with a record high block coefficient, Project RST27, for mixed sea/river shipping. Having retained sea class R2 and the ability to be operated round the year (the features of the Armada series) such tankers have an increased deadweight in river – 5,420 t (with the draught of 3.60 m) which makes them equal to tankers designed for operation in the mouths of rivers and while their sea deadweight is similar to that of Projects RST22 and RST22M. By the way, first chemical carriers of Project RST27 were also built for the Holding’s VF Tanker.
In the result, 47 tankers of Project RST27 have been built and the project was continued with construction of combination bulk oil / deck cargo carriers of Project RST54 (including 23 carriers for UCL Holding).
In 2009, long discussions of the Holding’s working group resulted in outlining of requirements for a new dry cargo ship of sea/river type to be operated by North-Western Shipping Company for transportation of general and bulk cargo, timber, grain and oversized cargo in the Mediterranean, Caspian, Black, Baltic, White and North seas, including voyages round Europe and the Irish sea in winter.
The key feature of the concept was a large midship hold (52.0 m long) allowing for transportation of project cargoes on direct Europe-Caspian voyages, which considerably contributed to the final financial result of the ship. That was how a series of Neva-Leader type ships appeared (Project RSD49). 11 ships were built including 7 ships for UCL Holding (in 2012- 2013).
Ten new coasters of Project DCV36 built for the North-Western Shipping Company in 2011- 2012 are intended for sea transportation of general and liquid bulk cargo including 20-ft and 40-ft containers up to 9,5 foot high, metal, grain, timber, coal, oversized and heavy cargo as well as hazardous cargoes (class 1.4S, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.1, 8, 9).
All in all, the ideas of UCL Holding specialists (representing not only Management Company but also Volga Shipping Company, North-Western Shipping Company, VF Tanker and Okskaya Shipyard) combined with those of Marine Engineering Bureau resulted in construction of 78 new cargo ships for the water transport of Russia.
The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) included two lead ships, VF Tanker - 1 of Project RST27 and Neva-Leader - 1 of Project RSD49, in the list of Significant Ships of 2012.
In 2014, RINA’s list of Significant Ships included the combination bulk oil / deck cargo carrier of Project RST54.
A lot have been done for a decade.
