Operation of vessels on the Northern Sea Route without icebreaker support is impermissible - Sergei Ivanov
Operation of vessels on the Northern Sea Route without icebreaker support is impermissible, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Sergei Ivanov, Special Representative of RF President for Nature Protection, Environment and Transport, as answering the Agency’s question today, 30 March 2017, at the IV International Arctic Forum ‘Arctic – Territory of Dialogue’ in Arkhangelsk.
“Even though the Northern Sea Route gradually thaws out during the summer navigation period, there is less and less ice, I am totally against allowing the vessels pass without icebreaker support, - said Sergei Ivanov. – The vessel itself should be of super ice class. If it is not, such a vessel will not pass our Northern Sea Route. End of story!”
