Port of Helsinki cargo traffic up 22% to 1,050,000 tonnes
January was remarkably busy for the Port of Helsinki, both in terms of cargo and passenger traffic. Cargo traffic in particular grew strongly: 1,050,000 tonnes of cargo passed through the Port in January, which is 22% more than the previous January. Of this amount, export made up 495,500 tonnes (+10.5%) and import 550,000 tonnes (+34.7%), the company said in its press release.
Particularly the traffic through the Vuosaari Harbour has increased significantly. Finnlines launched a new UK line from Vuosaari at the turn of the year, which had an effect on the growth of RoRo traffic. Container traffic also increased nicely (+18.1%, TEU) as the forest industry, among others, has increased its use of the Vuosaari Harbour in its export operations.
The Port of Helsinki's passenger traffic increased by 7.0% in January, compared to the previous year. This can be seen as particularly good, given several passenger ship maintenance dockings took place in January.
