EECV terminal handles its billionth tonne
EECV (Ertsoverslagbedrijf Europoort c.v.) recorded its billionth tonne of dry bulk put through at the company’s sea quay in Rotterdam. This achievement was reported on 12 December 2016. EECV is owned by two major companies in the German steel industry (thyssenkrupp Steel AG and Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann GmbH) and was established to optimise the supply of materials for the steel sector in terms of logistics, the Port of Rotterdam Authority said in a press release.
The company was founded in 1967 and focuses on the transhipment of ore and coal. EECV expanded with a coal terminal in 2003. In addition, EECV served as the home base for the Berge Stahl, the ship that is making its last call on the port of Rotterdam this week and that has transported close to 90 million tonnes of iron ore during its service.
EECV (port number 6250) has a 100-ha storage site and is bordered by Calandkanaal, which features a 1,100-long quay for sea-going vessels. This quay can simultaneously accommodate one coal vessel and two ore vessels with draughts of up to 23 metres. To the south of the terminal lies the Dintelhaven port basin. Dintelhaven’s quay is 900 metres long and is fitted with three barge loaders for inland shipping.
TK Veerhaven
Most of the cargo unloaded at EECV is then forwarded to its destination by inland shipping. This is handled by the Brielle-based push towing company TK Veerhaven. Every day, the firm transports 60,000 to 80,000 tonnes of ore, coal and steel products to Duisburg, Germany. This is mainly done with the aid of six-unit pusher combinations. Rail transport also deserves a mention: EECV operates a wagon loader that can automatically load trains with up to 44 cars.
Bulk throughput in Rotterdam
In 2015, the throughput of dry bulk in Rotterdam totalled 80 million tonnes. This breaks down into 34 million tonnes of iron ore/scrap, 23 million tonnes of coal, 11 million tonnes of agribulk and 12 million tonnes of other dry bulk. In 2015, the EECV facility handled 27 million tonnes. Together with the EMO terminal, EECV is Rotterdam’s most important terminal for the throughput of dry bulk.
