Cargo traffic in Azov-Don Basin of Russia’s inland water ways is expected to total 10 mln t this year, IAA PortNews correspondent cites Sergei Gaidayev, head of Azov-Don Basin Administration, as saying at the extended joint meeting of the Public Councils of Azov-Don and Volga-Don Basins held in Rostov-on-Don.
As of 11 November 2016, cargo traffic at Azov-Don Basin totaled 9,736,000 (+16.3% against the result of 2015). Transit cargo transportation amounted to 8.4 mln t (112% against previous year result). 1.47 mln t of cargo was shipped from the Don berths (+33.8%, year-on-year), 228,000 t – from the Severny Donets quarries (+117%, year-on-year).
The number of calls declined by 12% to 5,595 units.
“Here is a good example of waterway capacity depending on the depth. With the depth we had less vessels carried 16% more cargo. This will be very important when the Bagayevsky hydraulic works are built”, emphasized Sergei Gaidayev.
According to him, the navigation of 2016 featured much better hydrological conditions as compared with low water navigation of 2015. Yet, he marked the turnover could be higher.
The navigation at the Azov-Don and Volga-Don Basins of Russia’s inland water ways will be closed on December 1, 2016.
