The expansion of the DCT terminal at the Port of Gdansk enters its next phase
On 2 May, the HHL Fremantle ship called at the Port of Gdansk, delivering the first STS container cranes for the DCT terminal's T2 quay, which is currently under construction. Port of Gdansk Authority says more cranes will arrive at the Port of Gdansk in May and in August 2016.
Ultimately, the new quay for the terminal will be equipped with 5 state-of-the-art cranes designed to handle the world's largest container ships. Each of them will enable the transshipment of up to 25 rows of containers, which will ultimately make it possible to handle even those ships which are now still at the design stage. In comparison, the Triple-E class container ships calling at the DCT terminal nowadays, were designed for 23 rows of containers, counting from one side of the ship to the other.
The construction of the new quay started just over a dozen months ago - in January 2015. This is when the investor handed over the construction site to the contractor, N.V. BESIX, and the progress of work is already estimated to be at 65%. It is anticipated that all of the investment work will be completed in the second half of this year. This is when we can expect even more container giants to start calling at the DCT terminal.
At the moment, the DCT terminal is considered to be the largest container terminal on the Baltic Sea in terms of transshipment volumes. After the current investment is completed, the terminal's annual throughput capacity will double, reaching 3 million TEUs, which will make the DCT terminal the largest in the Baltic area not only in terms of transshipment volumes, but also in terms of projected handling capacity.
