OOIL becomes a FTSE4Good Global Index constituent
Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL), a company with principal business activities in container transport (OOCL) and logistics services (OOCL Logistics), has been included in the FTSE4Good Global Index, the Company said Monday in a press release.
The FTSE4Good Index Series, established since 2001, is one of the world’s most recognized and respected indices measuring the performance of companies demonstrating strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards for investors committed to socially responsible investments (SRI).
OOIL is honored to be the first Hong Kong-based enterprise in the international transportation and logistics industry to be included in the FTSE4Good Index. Independently assessed according to the FTSE4Good Index criteria, OOIL has met all ESG requirements to become a constituent of the Index following the December 2015 review, an important milestone in the company’s efforts to achieving long-term sustainability objectives.
“We are very pleased to be included in the FTSE4Good Global Index”, said Mr. C. C. Tung, Chairman of OOIL. “In addition to the positive testimonial of our corporate ESG work, it strongly reflects our progressive steps to corporate sustainability as well as our transparency in fulfilling our environmental and community responsibilities.”
“As a global corporate citizen, we are committed to operational excellence for sustainability and contributing to a greener supply chain for the future. In doing so we continue to meet and exceed our various stakeholders’ expectations in relation to corporate governance, environmental protection, community care and employee development and welfare.”
In addition to the company’s commitment to the FTSE4Good Index, OOIL is a founding constituent of, as well as listed in, the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index since its establishment in 2010. Only the top 30 companies are listed in the Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index to recognize the outstanding scores they receive in areas including corporate governance, social impact, and environmental care.
Over the years, many important initiatives contributed to the success of the company’s environmental sustainability performance, including investments in the latest state-of-the-art technologies for new containerships with advanced green features to meet current and future environmental requirements. Developing innovative information technology tools such as the OOCL Carbon Calculator was also a positive step forward to the transparency of carbon emission information for customers who are committed to their own environmental performance and objectives.
Working with international organizations such as the World Shipping Council (WSC) and Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) has also been an important part of OOIL’s ongoing journey to environmental stewardship by fostering continuous improvement in the environmental and social performance aspects of freight transport and promoting best practices in the industry.
OOIL owns one of the world’s largest international integrated container transport businesses, which trades under the name “OOCL”. With more than 320 offices in 70 countries, the Group is one of Hong Kong’s most international businesses. OOIL is listed on The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited.
