Brand new oceanographic research vessel Yantar joins Russia’s Northern Fleet (photo)
Brand new oceanographic research vessel Yantar joined Russia’s Northern Fleet on October 28, 2015, having completed the passage from the Atlantic Ocean to the Kola Bay. According to NF press center, the welcoming ceremony was attended by Admiral Vladimir Korolev, Commander of the Northern Fleet. He emphasized that the Fleet had obtained a unique research ship of the new generation with a set of unrivaled technical facilities.
Admiral Vladimir Korolev also said that technical capabilities of the Yantar would let raise the hydrographic and research activities of the Northern Fleet in the global ocean and especially in the Arctic to a new level.
Oceanographic research vessel Yantar is the lead ship of Project 22010 developed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau. The 108.1 m-long vessel, with a beam of 17.2 m and displacement of 5,200 t was laid down on July 8, 2010 at Baltic Shipyard Yantar based in Kaliningrad on the day of the yard’s 65-year anniversary.
The flag hoisting ceremony was held in May 2015 and the acceptance/delivery certificate was signed by the United Shipbuilding Corporation and RF Navy the same day.
