Freight traffic at Ukraine's Port of Kherson in Jan-Feb. grew 12.6% to 610,000 tonnes
Handling of imports / exports at the Port of Kherson based in Ukraine in January-February 2015 rose to 610,000 tonnes (+12.6%) from the same period last year, the Cetre for Transport Strategies (CTS) reported citing the Authority of Ukraine Seaports.
During the first two month the port did not transship liquid bulk cargo. Handling of dry bulk cargo increased by 1.7% to 412,000 tonnes. Coal shipments totaled 21,000 tonnes. The port saw a 59.6% drop in the segment of chemical and mineral fertilizers to 35,000 tonnes. Grain exports shrank by 38% to 119,000 tonnes.
The volume break bulk cargo soared nearly twofold year-on-year to 198,000 tonnes. The port moved 15,000 tonnes of timber cargo (an increase of 11.7 times), 130,000 tonnes of rolled metal products (an increase of 3.8 times). The volume of ferrous scrap fell 33.2% to 35,000 tonnes.
Kherson Commercial Sea Port (founded in 1778) is a modern port and one of the biggest in Ukraine. The port is located in the Dnieper delta 53 miles off the Black Sea. It is an important river and sea junction of Ukraine. Projected capacity of the Port of Kherson is 5 million tonnes of different cargo. The port has 17 dockside cranes, 6 floating cranes, and 135 units of handling equipment. The port cranes with lifting capacity up to 10 tones and floating cranes with lifting capacity up to 150 tones are used during the reloading operations.
