Three RS class vessels included into RINA’s ‘Significant Ships of 2014’ list (photo)
Experts of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA, UK) have included three vessels built under the survey of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) into its ‘Significant Ships’ list of 2014. According to the pc of RS, the list includes the following RS class ships: large capacity LNG carrier Veliky Novgorod, Ro-Ro/Passenger ship Berkarar and multipurpose oblique icebreaking ship Baltika. The above vessels are acknowledged as the best in the class.
The Berkarar is the first of two ferries built in the Uljanik Shipyard in Pula, Croatia, for Turkmenistan’s State Service for Marine and River Transport. RS class notation: КМ✪ R1 AUT1 HELIDECK RO-RO Passenger ship. The ship can accommodate about 200 passengers and carry up to 54 trucks (up to 17 meters in length). The ferry intended for operation in the Caspian Sea features maximum speed of 18 knots. The vessel’s design complies with the current standards on environmental security.
The Veliky Novgorod is the lead ship in the series of ultramodern LNG carriers was built at STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co. Ltd (S. Korea). The Atlanticmax gas carriers with membrane cargo tanks of 170,000 cbm capacity are provided with equipment suitable for operating in low temperature conditions (up to -30°С). The design of the vessel provides for the use of a dual-fuel diesel-electric propulsion plant that allows to use LNG as fuel, thus enabling to reduce the level of NOx and SOx emissions into the air. The ship will have the highest class of environmental protection. RS class notation: KM✪ Ice2 AUT1 OMBO EPP ANTI-ICE LI CCO ECO-S WINTERIZATION(-30) gas carrier type 2G (methane).
The Baltika is an innovative multi-purpose salvage ice class ship built under technical supervision of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping for FSI Sea Rescue Service of Rosmorrechflot (Federal Marine and River Transport Agency of Russia). RS class notation: KM✪ Icebreaker6 [1] AUT1-ICS OMBO FF3WS EPP DYNPOS-1 ECO-S HELIDECK Oil recovery ship (>60 °C)/salvage ship/tug. The innovative vessel Baltika is the world’s first icebreaking ship with an asymmetric hull. The vessel features an asymmetric hull, patented oblique design and three 360 degrees rotating propulsors, which allow the vessel to operate efficiently sideways, astern and ahead. In oblique mode the vessel will be able to generate 50 m wide channel in 0.6 m thick ice..

Every year, the Royal Institution of Naval Architects publishes the lists of of Significant Ships and Significant Small Ships. Last year, the list contained three RS class vessels: mixed 'river-sea' class tanker Almetyevsk, LPG carrier Sibur Voronezh and 320,000-dwt VLCC Svet.
