RS hosts special cancellation of stamps and envelopes to mark centenary of Register’s Scientific and Technical Council (photo)
On February 10, 2015, Russian Maritime Register of Shipping held a ceremonial cancellation of stamps and envelopes commemorating the 100-year anniversary of the Register’s Scientific and Technical Council, IAA PortNews journalist reports.
The ceremony of special cancellation was attended by RS CEO Sergei Sedov, Executive Officer of Russian Post’s Branch for Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad region Vladimir Sambur, Executive Vice-President of Sovcomflot Igor Tonkovidov, Chairman of Scientific and Technical Council of CNIIMF Vsevolod Peresypkin.
In his opening speech Sergei Sedov said it was a historic day “as the ceremony of special cancellation of stamps has been held by RS for the first time in its history”.
He noted that RS is the only classification society in the world to have civil nuclear-powered ships in its class. “To a great extent it should be credited to STC as the Council members discuss and approve special safety standards for nuclear fleet”, Sergei Sedov said.
“As of today, accidents rate involving ships built to RS class is lower than the average global rate”, he reminded.
According to RS CEO, postage stamps depicting icebreakers Ermak, Lenin, 50 Let Pobedy prove the credit of RS.
In his turn, Vladimir Sambur congratulated all RS employees and STC members on the centenary of the Council. “We take participation in today’s special cancellation as a great honour”, he said.
The souvenir block contains 4 stamps with 3 RS class icebreakers (world’s first Arctic icebreaker Ermak, world’s first nuclear icebreaker Lenin, world’s largest and most powerful nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy) and RS headquarters building.
The circulation is 500 copies. Specially for the ceremony, Russian Post had prepared a post mark with a fixed date - 10.02.2015. The special post mark is effective for one day. Upon completion of the ceremony it is to be kept at the A.S. Popov Central Museum of Communications.
Some of the First Day Envelopes with souvenir blocks are supposed to be sent to certain marine facilities of RS class to be cancelled with post marks of local post offices.
The Scientific and Technical Council was established in 1915 for coordination of the research work focused on safe navigation. STС united the most prominent scientists and leading experts of the time in the field of ship design, construction and operation. Konstantin Boklevsky, its first elected chairman, was a naval architect, a prominent scientist, the organiser and dean of the first shipbuilding faculty in Russia at the St Petersburg Polytechnical Institute.
Today, STC coordinates all the activities of RS. STC includes 16 specialised sections and unites all leading scientists and highly qualified experts from research and design offices, shipping companies, shipyards and industry focused educational institutions.
