In the navigation period of 2014 (as of November 20), cargo transportation within the area of responsibility of FSI Azov-Don Basin Authority totaled 13,763,000 t (+0.6%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews journalist cites Andrei Lavrishchev, head of traffic management service at ADBA, as saying at the meeting on sustainable operation of Rostov-on-Don seaport, safe navigation and dockage of vessels in seaports of the Azov Sea, as well as icebreaking assistance in autumn-winter 2014-2015. The meeting was held in Rostov-on-Don on November 20.
Andrei Lavrishchev noted that transit accounts for the majority of cargo traffic. In 2014, transit totaled 11,596,000 t which is 84.3% of total turnover.
The berths of the Don river handled 1,811,000 (5% of total turnover, -9%, year-on-year).
Tankers account for 60% of vessel turnover, dry cargo carriers – 30%, passenger ships and tugboats – 10%.
Andrei Lavrishchev said navigation-2014 was quite difficult.
“The first part of the navigation period and the middle part of it saw the fleet expansion: some 90 ships came from the Volga Basin which resulted in congestion. Hydraulic engineering systems were close to the limit of their capacity which required intense traffic control,” Andrei Lavrishchev told.
The second part of the navigation period (starting from September) was complicated with unfavorable weather conditions: strong western winds, fogs and insufficient depth.
