UN subcommission acknowledges middle part of Sea of Okhotsk to be part of Russian continental shelf
The subcommission of the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf has acknowledged the 52,000-m2 enclave in the middle part of the Sea of Okhotsk to be the continental shelf of the Russian Federation, says the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.
In order to provide the subcommission with additional materials, Russia arranged the collection and processing of new data including additional bathymetrical survey in the water area of the Sea of Okhotsk.
The materials provided by Russia have been appreciated by the subcommission, which has been fully satisfied with the provided data and expressed the gratitude for prompt and sound submission of additional materials.
With the completed analyses of the provided materials the subcommission has no doubts about reasonability of Russian view. Therefore, the enclave has been acknowledged to be the part of Russian continental shelf. According to the international norms, the subcommission will in the nearest time elaborate recommendations for the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. The will be submitted to the Commission at its 33rd session in February-March 2014. Upon approval of recommendations, the legal process of acknowledging the enclave to be the part of the continental shelf of the Russian Federation will be over.
