MOL Comfort fore section sinks
The fore part of MOL Comfort which caught fire four days earlier sank yesterday in high seas near 19'56"N 65'25"E (water depth about 3,000m) at 19:00 UTC, the shipowner Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) reported in its urgent update.
The shipowner has reported this fact to the flag state of Bahamas, Indian authorities and parties concerned.
The fire broke out on July 6 from the rear end of fore part while the section was being towed by a contracted salvage company’s tug boat. The tug and three boats, including an Indian Coast Guard patrol boat "SAMUDRA PRAHARI, were responding to the fire.
Earlier reports said the hull of MOL-owned containership MOL Comfort on June 17 fractured in 2 parts while under way on the Indian Ocean. Ten days later the ship’s aft part with cargo on board sank in the Indian Ocean.
