Port of Liepaja six-month cargo volume drops 29.1% to 2.49m tonnes
Cargo throughput at the terminals of Latvia-based Port of Liepaja in January - June declined by 29.1% from the same period last year to 2.49 million tonnes, the Port Authority press service told PortNews.
In the reporting period, shipments of grain fell 37.8% year-on-year to 835,200 tonnes. Handling of building materials decreased by 15.5% to 208,000 tonnes, shipments of timber cargo fell 30 8% to 279,900 tonnes. Coal volume slumped by 56.8% to 48,200 tonnes. Oil products transshipment fell 17.9% to 97,000 tonnes while crude oil volume soared 44.7% to 82,000 tonnes. Besides, handling of chemicals increased by 21.1% to 47,000 tonnes.
There was a 84.3-percent drop in scrap metal volume to 59,800 tonnes. Shipments of ferrous metals fell 5.4% to 182,400 tonnes, of non-ferrous metals - by 51.6% to 74,500 tonnes.
Container traffic increased in the six-month period by 13% to 2,434 TEUs. Handling of Ro-Ro cargoes rose 22% to 16,032 units. Passenger traffic increased by 52% to 21,522 people. The number of ship calls in the first half of the year fell by 24% to 693 units.
