Throughput of port Riga (Latvia) down 7.4% to 17.4 mln t in HI’13
In January-June, 2013, the port of Riga (Latvia) handled 17,402,600 tonnes of cargo (-7.4%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the port authority. In the 6-month period, transshipment of coal fell by 12.8% to 6,730,400 tonnes, oil products – by 8.3% to 3,978,500 tonnes, wood chips – by 7.4% to 486,800 tonnes, grain – by 82.6% to 63,600 tonnes. Transshipment of chemical cargo climbed by 13.2% to 803,800 tonnes.
The port’s container throughput increased by 3% to 183,876 TEUs, transshipment of Ro-Ro cargoes gained 2.5% to 296,200 tonnes.
Freeport of Riga lies on both banks of the River Daugava covering 6.3 hectares. The port’s berth length is 13,800 meters, maximum draft at the berths is 12.2 meters. Up to 80% of the Freeport of Riga cargo turnover is made up of transit cargoes forwarded to or received from the CIS countries. In 2012, Freeport of Riga increased its throughput by 5.8%, year-on-year, to 36,051,900 tonnes of cargo.
