Finland’s Hamina-Kotka half-year throughput rises 3.5% to 7.37m tonnes
Cargo volumes of Finland-based combined port of HaminaKotka in the first half of the year rose 7.9% compared with the same period a year ago to 7,37 million tonnes, the Port Authority statistics said.
Exports increased by 2.1% to 4.9 million tonnes, including paper cargo - by 5.9% to 1.44 million tonnes, pulp - by 19.7% to 689,800 tonnes, timber cargo - by 16.1% to 700,000 tonnes. Dry bulk cargo volume soared 50% year-on-year to 631,900 tonnes. T
Half-year imports increased by 6.3%. Shipments of timber cargo increased by 12%. Handling of transit cargo rose 1.5%, while inland cargo volume shrank by 13%.
In the reporting period, the port’s container traffic rose 5.9% to 323,950 TEUs. Handling of imported vehicles increased by 27.5% to 56,920 autos.
The number ship calls fell 3% to 1,337 units.
The Finnish ports Kotka (stevedoring company Kotkan Satama Oy) and Hamina (Haminan Satama Oy) merged under a new name on May 1, 2011. As a result, the HaminaKotka has turned into the largest export port of the country. In 2011, cargo throughput at the port rose 2.3% year-over-year to 16.05 million tons. Kotka is located some 50 kilometers from the Russian Federation border, 280 km off St. Petersburg, 1000 km from Moscow. Port of Kotka comprises ports of Mussalo, Hietanen, Kantasatama, berth Puolanlaituri (Polish berth), berth Halla, and also port premises Sunila. Port of Hamina is the eastern port of Finland located 35 km from the Russian border.
