Baltiysky Zavod delivers stern of first Mistral-class ship to STX France and lays down stern of second ship
French shipyard STX France has accepted the stern of the Vladivostok, Russian Navy's first Mistral-class helicopter carrying amphibious assault ship, built by Baltiysky Zavod and the stern of the Sevastopol, the second helicopter carrier, was laid down at the Russian shipyard. This was announced by the press center of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC).
The delivery and acceptance certificate has been signed today, July 4, within the framework of the International Maritime Defence Show (IMDS-2013). Immediately after the ceremony Baltiysky Zavod laid down the stern of the second ship.
The certificate was signed by Vladimir Shmakov, USC President, and Laurent Castaing, General Manager of STX France.
The stern built by Baltiysky Zavod is 94 meters long, its launching weight is 6,400 tonnes. Apart from the hull painting the shipyard has carried out partial piping (about 5,000 meters) and equipping of the hull.
Baltiysky Zavod is building sterns for two helicopter carriers, the Vladivostok and the Sevastopol which are under construction in France to the order of Russian Defence Ministry. Russia and France signed a contract for two French-built Mistral-class helicopter carriers in June 2011. United Shipbuilding Corporation (which incorporates Baltiysky Zavod) is a sub-contractor of STX France in Saint Nazaire.
Upon completion of the stern transportation to Saint Nazaire, which is to take 17 days (from July 8 till July 25), STX France will complete the construction of the ship (the forebody has been built in France). The Vladivostok will be floated out in October 2013 and delivered to Russia. When fitted according to the requirements of Russian Navy the ship will join the fleet in autumn 2014.
The metal cutting for the stern of the second Mistral-class ship (Sevastopol) started in May 2013. The construction will last till June 2014. Then it will also be towed to Saint Nazaire for completion.
Total length of the hull of Mistral-class ship is 199 m, breadth – 32 m, depth at the flight deck level – 27 m, draught 6.42 m with the displacement of 22,600 tonnes. Maximum speed with the draught of 6.42 m - 18.5 knots. Crew - 177 members, passengers – 481 persons.
Baltiysky Zavod OJSC specializes in construction of rank 1 surface-crafts, ice class vessels with nuclear and diesel-electric propulsion plants, nuclear floating energy units, floating distilling plants. The shipyard was set up in 1856. In its history Baltiysky Zavod which built over 600 ships and vessels was privatized several times and returned to state control when financial problems arose. In late 2011, the shipyard once more fell under the control of the state represented by the United Shipbuilding Corporation. To preserve the staff and the competence of the shipyard, USC founded Baltiysky Zavod – sudostroyeniye LLC.
The Backlog of orders of Baltiysky Zavod-Sudostroyeniye LLC is currently valued at about RUB 60 bln. The largest orders are: 60-MWt nuclear icebreaker, 25-MWt diesel-electric icebreaker, floating power unit of the world’s first floating nuclear heat and power plant. In 2012, the Company’s turnover mage RUB 9 bln, net profit – RUB 55 mln.
