Throughput of port Liepaja (Latvia) down 28.9% to 2,077,400 tonnes Jan-May’13
In January-May, 2013, the port of Liepaja handled 2,077,400 tonnes of cargo (-28.9%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the port authority. In the 5-month period, gran of grain fell 43.8% to 648,000 tonnes, timber – 33.6% to 232,100 tonnes, construction materials – 16.4% to 161,300 tonnes.
Transshipment of ferrous metal climbed 17.2% to 182,400 tonnes (the last month saw no changes), ferrous metal – was down 50.5% to 70,600 tonnes, scrap metal – 79.7% to 55,900 tonnes (no changes), coal – 39.4% to 48,200 tonnes (no changes), wood pellets – was up 40% to 78,700 tonnes.
The port’s container throughput gained 17% to 2,044 TEUs. Transshipment of ro-ro cargo cargo climbed 21% to 13,155 units. The number of calls fell 21% to 591 vessels.
The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries, mainly Belorus. In 2012, the port of Liepaja handled 7.43 mln tonnes of cargo.
